For those not following our Facebook page, and I know there are a number of you, I've pasted, below, a conversation started by John Buckley (North Hants Branch). John mentions his disappointment that there was no beer tent as normal. What a surprise to see Matt Dean's response that "the branch apparently said they didn’t want to do it".

Whilst enjoying my Ale at the Downton Brewery bar, I commented on the lack of a Real Ale bar.

I was told Downton were only asked 3 weeks ago to be present as the organisers realised there would be no Real Ale otherwise...

This reminds me why I don't do facebook - misinformation and stirring. The branch were not approached to do or participate in a beer tent

The Food & Drink beer tent has always been a joint one with CAMRA taking no financial risk. Last year the Arts Centre were given the whole food efstival to organise at very short notice and we partnered with them for the beer tent. The food festival last year had more stalls with street food than previously and they were placed on the main market square area along with Wessex and other cider producers, near to the pubs and pretty well as far as possible away from te beer & cider tent. When people bought food they also got a drink from the same area. Wessex 3L bags of cider were doing very well. Alas the beer tent was in the Guildhall square far from the people seeking a drink to go with their food. It just about broke even.

With the formation of Wiltshire Creative - at some point before the merger so from memory late 2017 I asked the Arts Centre if Wiltshire Creative would be running the food & drink festival and they said no and that if there was anything they understood it would be the City Council.

Around that time I approached Matt Dean and we chatted about the options. I said CAMRA would ideally partner with someone and also that there would need to be some thought about the position of any beer tent after the poor layout in 2017. I explained the lead time for a repeat event (budget submitted 4 months in advance) and if CAMRA were to take all responsibility for the beer & cider tent it would be budget submitted 6 months in advance. I left it with Matt that if there was a food & drink festival whch was uncertain at that time - we could possibly partner with the council. He thought the council would have little appetite for taking the financial risk. It was left that he would let us know if anything progressed.

In mid August Matt asked me about CAMRA doing a beer tent and I said it was too late for the CAMRA process especially as on discussion there was still no chance of the council taking the financial risk. With the current low risk attitude of CAMRA budget scrutineers towards festivals added to the fact that figures from 2017 would show very poor return and the issue of it being a marquee there would be a flat refusal from CAMRA if I had started talkign to them about it 6 weeks ahead of the event instead of 6 months in advance.

At no point was I approached by a council officer to run te tent.
